There is so much more in this novel than the blurb suggests. I was amazed over and over again with the descriptive passages that occurred within the pages. Every detail that a reader may want to know, and understand, about the country of Iraq is contained.The author delves into detail concerning the Kurds, the Assyrians, and the Turks so that the reader understands the conflict that has raged for years. Delan, Olivia's boyfriend, is a Kurd and it is through his eyes that we come to know the history so much better. As se stated 'Everyone thinks they are right....and they are all right'... A glimpse into times forgotten when Secretary Kissinger is brought up. From a historical perspective, it is truly enlightening to read these passages.Olivia Murray is a secretary with dreams of becoming a photographer... eventually. Her Dad purchased a new camera and ordered a couple of books on photography so she could become familiar with the 'trade'. Her wish was in June of 1979 and shortly thereafter she is on her way to Baghdad with Delan...Oh my goodness, the old adage of be careful of what you wish for comes to mind.So many wonderful passages of excellent descriptions fill this novel...The morning call to prayer in Baghdad at a little after 4 AM will fill your mind with the sounds of the muezzin's voice. Shortly after that , the table is set for breakfast and one is able to smell the aromas that fill the small space... One more of my favorites was the fire poppies. Just incredibly rich with meaning and description. I would be remiss if I didn't mention the crying man who is absolutely struck with grief. This is also a truly amazing part of this novel...As Olivia learns. ideas and thoughts that are pre-conceived are not always true. Basing those on facts are the best way to travel through life. This novel is also about the relationship between Delan and Olivia and searching for those little known facts about the other that will lead to love. maybe.Powerfully written and poignant on so many levels. This is one that I will definitely read again at some point.. Yes, for me it is that outstanding.Most highly recommended. Having trouble finishing. Every other paragraph reminds us, in advance, that "this will not end well," and it's getting tedious....If only I'd done things differently, I look back on this time before the awful thing, I miss him so much, life is empty without him, we could have averted doom by staying in Switzerland, or this thing, or this other thing, but we didn't...All as we the readers creep through the story leading up to the bad things.I get it. Life sucks for the Kurds. Show more, talk less.If it picks up I'll come back and mea culpa.
